Fools Gold

We all need a spring shakeup sometimes, a mental spring cleaning, if you will. Turns out, a quick trip to New England was a great place for it. The days are getting longer and standing at the bow of a boat was nothing short of blissful, with red cheeks and thick fisherman sweaters to protect against the still-cool breeze.

It’s impossible to come back without visions of lobstahs and nautical knots and navy blazers with gold buttons dancing in our heads. The latter is especially delightful because don’t we all want a little bit of flash coming out of winter? We’re tentatively pulling out our warm weather clothes, piling our couches with spring and summer throw pillows and scouring the paint swatch section looking to freshen up our foyers.

Fortunately, as trends have it, metals have been popping up in all manners of interior design. A sprinkling of gold polka dots across your daughter’s wall above her dresser or a star-shaped light fixture in your son’s super hero themed bedroom.

Go big or go small but bringing a bit of metal into your décor is the perfect early-spring pick me up.

Spring Showers

Denver, the supposed city of 300 days of sunshine, and yet I'm watching a slight mist from the sky land on my car from our window. I might be one of six rain-loving fools in this city who is pleased about it (if you’re one of those six, you’re my people) and we all know it snowed last week and it will snow this month. But for now, in the wee hours of spring, it smells like dirt and grass and Ryan Gosling circa, “It still isn’t over.”

While it’s not unusual for us to drape ourselves in blouses, dresses and coats in flower prints, big and small, from March to May, the moody florals on display here focus on the delicious, drizzly part of spring. The smell of freshness, the snow melting over the first bits of green grass, the lime-colored teeny leaves unfurling on branches, sending everyone’s allergies into a tizzy. We're not interested in the Easter dress, Lily Pulitzer bright pinks and greens this year. They’re not so sweet, these florals.

Luckily, we’ve got plenty of ways to surround ourselves with them, from our beach bags to the home.
