Eating Pretty

November 12, 2018 Guest User

Is it just us or is Thanksgiving coming WAY too early this year? Perhaps all the excitement of the last month or so made it go by so fast. The election was a little over a week ago, Halloween seems like it was yesterday and the weather has been too all over the map for us to settle into the season of giving thanks. But let’s get in the spirit, shall we?

Some of us will be thankful for the beautiful meal we can lay out in front of our families—and those families will be just as thankful for the meal that we’ve lovingly prepared for them all day. Others will be thankful for the ability to cater a holiday meal to satisfy a party of twelve, including the preferences of sweet potato casserole AND mashed potatoes with giblet gravy. Still others will greet all guests arriving for Friendsgiving and whisk away to the kitchen favorite pumpkin pies, bowls of salad and plates of balsamic-glazed Brussels sprouts. But whether your meal is a party of two or a potluck, your table should be both dressed up for the occasion and make guests feel at home.

Here are MDG’s favorite dinner table accessories.

Set in Stone

We’ve always been impressed by marble. We know ancient philosophers spouted their truths among Ionic and Doric columns. Michelangelo waxed poetic about how every block of stone has a statue inside it and it was his job to discover it, yada yada. It’s an expensive material, a texture made more beautiful by its impurities. Marble brings a luxurious feel to any room with its sweeping swathes of dark across stark white.

While we appreciate the Parthenon and Bernini’s The Ecstasy of St. Teresa, we like to do marble in a fresh and cool way. We want clean and comfortable, not stuffy or old fashioned. How can we incorporate marble into our homes without making it look like the chateau at Versailles?

In big doses, pair marble with smooth lines and no fuss with warm wood accents for a bright and elegant kitchen. Tile a wall in a striking color in unexpected diagonals to leave a funky zigzag border. Add other touches of luxe with small dishes, bookends striped with wood or a clock with glinting metal hands. The trend has made its way over to textiles too, so put a marble-patterned duvet on your bed or wallpaper in an entryway.
