No Place Like A Vacation Home

June 29, 2017 Guest User

When Dorothy clicked her ruby-slippered heels together, she had seen enough of the world, real or imagined, and wanted nothing more than to go home. Sure, Kansas is great and all, but there have got to be some parts of her adventures she wished she could have taken with her. A section of the yellow brick road here, a sliver of the Emerald City there, why not?

We at MDG are not alone when sometimes we wish we could click our heels together and be anywhere but home. When that is close to impossible, why not play a little make believe ourselves? If we add enough vacation home elements to our every day homes, we're practically on vacation. Right?

First, we need some luxe furniture pieces. A statement bed or a chair suspended from the ceiling  are just enough of a break from the ordinary.

Textiles, or textile-inspired treasures sprinkled around the room add a richness to your home, especially in bold colors and bohemian patterns. Mix and match any way you want from casually coordinated to happily chaotic.

With a vacation home, it's all about the details, big or small. Add a loud wallpaper in an unexpected place or hang a tapestry instead of framed art.

Sometimes, you really have to blur the lines between inside and outside. Bring in some flowers and plants, some in-or-out furniture, or, if you've no green thumb, a fresh-smelling candle.

Lastly, it's not a stayvacation without an adventure. Keep supplies handy no matter where the day takes you, whether you're looking for a workout, some pool-side tunes, or inspiration.

Keep Calm and Head to the Lake

July 21, 2016 Guest User

Does it get any better than waking up at the lake house in the middle of July? It takes a moment to realize that all you can hear are nature sounds, insects buzzing, birds calling and, if you’re close enough, maybe the water lapping at the shore. There is coffee to be had on the porch, with barely a hint of chill rolling off the water. Poppy seeds from your everything bagel drop into the pages of Vogue that you finally have time to read.

It’s never too early to slip on a bathing suit and sunscreen and pick your way down the dirt path to the lake’s edge. You stand at the end of the dock, your toes gripping the rough edge, and then you dive in, your fingers grazing the sandy bottom before you turn your face towards the surface of the cold water. You take turns tubing or jet skiing with your kids and forget all about lunch.

As the sun starts to go down, a fire is built in the pit in the backyard and marshmallows are roasted before dinner. It’s vacation, why not? You slap at the bugs on your lake-sticky legs and sip red wine while the steaks and potatoes sizzle on the grill. Finally, you all traipse inside and curl up on the couch under a big chunky blanket while a storm rolls in and a scary movie comes on. You fall asleep happily, knowing you get to do it all again tomorrow.
