Living Large

August 18, 2016 Guest User

Whether it’s a bucket list goal or a pipe dream in passing, the tiny home trend is going full steam ahead. On paper, it’s not hard to see why. These homes, typically between 100 to 400 square feet, are eco-friendly, from the amount of construction materials used, to the amount of electricity needed to the size of the carbon footprint.

Tiny homes can be built or acquired for a very reasonable sum. Most owners find themselves without a mortgage and some are even without any debt at all. Because of the size and the general lack of clutter, tiny homeowners are able to spend time, money and energy that might normally be spent on housework or repairs, on travel and hobbies.

With so little space, one may wonder how to decorate a tiny home, or if there is room for that at all. Below are some of our favorite design tips for tiny living.

1)      Decide on one cohesive color scheme for the whole spacy. Too much of everything spells claustrophobia.

2)      Open shelving and easy access dishes and utensils are your friend. Better make them pretty.

3)      Every nook, cranny, shelf and surface is hot real estate in a tiny home. If a trinket or decoration doesn’t trigger emotion, get rid of it.

4)      Include plenty of windows and skylights. In a small space, natural light and views of your surroundings can feel like you’ve expanded your living space outside. And speaking of…

5)      Expand your living space outside. Dine alfresco, sit around a fire pit instead of a coffee table, or relax in a hammock instead of a sectional.

6)      Create a luxe master bedroom space. If it’s on the ground floor, you’ll be looking at it all day and if it’s lofted it becomes a real retreat. Either way, keep it cozy and inviting.

A Dorm with a View

August 11, 2016 Guest User

The light has changed just enough that we know fall is right around the corner. For some, school has started but no matter when the first day is, one of the most satisfying parts is supplies shopping. The smell of pens and highlighters, folders and loose leaf—ahh, hasn’t there been a scented candle called School Supplies made yet? If there were going to be something even more exciting it would be dorm room shopping.

There’s a very specific thrill to be had with the spotting of the Twin-XL label on the outside of your new favorite striped sheets. Who knew one could get so excited about bed risers that double as electrical outlets? Should your shower caddy match your loofah or your bath towel? How many kinds of mustard will fit in a mini fridge? Does your new roommate even like mustard?

Whether you overthink it or not, college is a fresh start. It’s probably the first time you’ve got a space that’s all your own (or half of a space) to decorate and personalize. It’s where you’ll sleep, eat at two in the morning, pull an all-nighter to finish your final paper and meet some of your lifetime best friends. It’s also where you’ll realize that you have too many shoes, not enough light bulbs, and you don’t actually know how to brew a cup of coffee.

No matter what, with the right mix of new goodies and reminders of home, you can make your dorm your favorite spot on campus.
