The Dirt Stops Here

January 19, 2017 Guest User

At MDG, we believe that the complete utilitarianism of a mudroom is in fact the beauty of it. No matter how big or small, it is one of the most hard-working spaces in a home. We love that with each design element, we ask, "Is this the most functional for our lifestyle?" We need space that can handle the snowstorms and the slushy aftermath. We want to come home from a weekend ski trip on Sunday night—after sitting in traffic for hours—and have a convenient and tough-as-nails spot to dump our boots, boards, hats, and helmets. We've compiled a list as well as a few examples of essential elements for our favorite mudroom.

Hooks and racks. Isn't it so much easier for shedding layers if you can just hang them all on hooks and not have to worry about opening a closet and finding hangers? Hang hooks lower on the wall for smaller people and to utilize more wall space.

Clock. A big, easy-to-read clock adds a homey touch while still working to tell you exactly how late you are as you dash out the door.

Cubbies and baskets. High shelves and storage for off-season shoes or sporting equipment and easily accessible baskets for gloves or mittens.

Boot tray and area rug. A tray to catch the melting snow and salt from boots can be easily cleaned, while a pretty area rug is a relief for chilly tootsies.

Bench. Sometimes you've got one too many coats on à la Randy from A Christmas Story and you can barely reach your feet to put your shoes on. It's best to have a place to sit.

Lighting: This is the last room of your home you see in the morning and the first room at night. Light it up and give yourself something pretty to look at with some statement lighting.

The Kids Eat Alright

January 12, 2017 Guest User

We at MDG believe that the kitchen table is where the magic happens. Long conversations over family dinners about science class shenanigans or debates about whether or not Santa Claus is real after breakfast of pancakes and bacon—is it us or was Mom unusually mum during that conversation? Homework is done here, flashcards of the state capitals are memorized here, thousands of games of Battleship or Go Fish are played here. We spend so much time with our families at the kitchen table. It's important to keep it comfortable, beautiful, and a place to start conversations. Below are MDG's kid-friendly kitchen table must-haves.

1. A bench with plenty of pillows. Use a cushion in a heavy, flat weave to make spots and stains less noticeable and to keep signs of wear and tear from fidgety kids at bay. Colorful, fun pillows are comfy and easy to change out.

2. Make the kiddos feel special and proudly display their artwork in a framed gallery, on a clothesline or add magnetic elements to chalkboard paint and have them hang their favorites right on the wall.

3. An eye catching light fixture. We like whimsical, colorful or out of this world.

4. A sturdy table top. Nobody needs to worry about putting down a table cloth every day. Choose a top that can handle a little spilled milk or a few raucous games of Yahtzee.

5. A useful centerpiece. Try a large bowl for apples for easy snacking, a box of succulents for kids to take care of, or a pot of basil, rosemary and sage in a fruit-themed planter that you can have little chef pick to season dinner.

6. A no-stress window treatment. We like out-of-the-way Roman shades or sturdy and easy to clean wooden blinds.
